Public Toilets

The 2016 Dollar Community Action Plan identified the lack of public toilets as a key issue for Dollar and we know the problem is ongoing.

The public toilets in Dollar are located on the West Burnside and have been out of service for nearly 10 years. A lack of public toilet puts a strain on local cafes and restaurants and is also not ideal for visitors and those living in the community who need access to public toilets when out and about e.g. elderly and those with small children. The Trust intends to implement the wish of the community by supporting the refurbishment or replacement of the public toilets.

In so doing, the Trust has been successful at securing funding from the ‘Community Led Local Development‘ (CLLD) fund which gives local communities the power to tackle their own, local challenges. The funding is to pay for an options appraisal for the community. The options will include the refurbishment of the current building (as shown in the photo above) or a new building in keeping with the town. The community will also be invited to provide their own suggestions.

Design teams (architects and structural engineers) are being invited to submit a tender to design the new building. The Invitation to Tender including the project brief can be downloaded below:

Project Background

The provision of public toilets has been an ongoing project for the Trust. In 2019 we carried out a public consultation about the feasibility of taking over the ownership and operation of the toilets.

As well as asking the community about their thoughts in relation to public toilet provision in Dollar, we also asked them to consider two possibilities:
• An entry charge of 50p which would make it closer to break-even. We would aim to have an electronic payment method, perhaps in addition to coin operation.
• For it to be funded through community fundraising. We estimate the annual cost is currently about £2,000.

The results of the survey are below:

The project stalled slightly due to COVID and other commitments but is now progressing again with the help of the CLLD funding. Our Board member Sue Price has also been supporting the project over the last 12 months. She has had a number of engineers visit Dollar to look at the current provision and has also met with Clackmannanshire Council.
